Shoe Heads!

First, my apologies for not being as active with this blog as I could be. I'll blame it on the monsters...

Second, I have been making these "Shoe Heads" or mini-mask wall hanging sculptures. The base is the cardboard form that sometimes comes inside of a new shoe. Having no budget for new shoes, I head to the local shoe store, Paul's Shoes here in Chestertown, MD. They normally recycle these in the curbside bins with the paper recycling, but hand them over for me to give them a bit of new life. You could approach your local shoe store if you are interested in using these as an art material!

Also, I've started using another by-product of the shoe industry, suede scraps from a moccasin company. Pictured is one of my recent 'babies'. I also have some of the earlier ones in my artfire shop. Others I have made have sold well locally, and I occasionally list a few in my etsy shop as well.

Wharjit and Muncher

I would like to introduce those of you who haven't already met to Wharjit and Muncher.

Both were uncovered recently on the banks of a nearby glacial river, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Wharjit is a docile, long since extinct creature of the alpine tundra, and so far I've had several people insist that Muncher reminds them of their Mother-In-Law. Must be due to her drop dead gorgeous eyes or something....

Lemonwood Clock

I'm so excited to be a part of the team! Thanks for allowing me to join.
My name is Rebekah Robson and my shop is Lemonwood Clock ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/lemonwoodclock ). I sell handmade toys and gifts. Right now my shop features my sock monsters. I also have a line of dolls I hope to post soon.
I sew a lot and do acrylic paintings. My other projects and interests can be found on my blog.
In the past, my shop only consisted of my paintings. But since the birth of my 5 month old son, I became passionate about making toys that are safe and fun for him. He loved his first sock monster so much I made him another one. And then another... and well, making sock monsters is addictive! And that is the story of how Lemonwood Clock transitioned into a toy shop :)

Monster on the Move

As the days get shorter and there's less gardening to take up my time, I can shift back into monster-making mode. Soon I'll be adding more to my etsy shop but first I wanted to set one monster free in the wild:

prepped_for_toy_society

The Toy Society started in Australia but has spread worldwide -- the idea is to drop the toys where kids (or grownups) will find them and take them home. This monster, Glumpy, will be my first drop but I have also signed up for the worldwide Christmas Toy Drop. Check my Flickr stream to see where Glumpy was dropped and who found her!

Ochibo Painting!

Ochibo just received the absolute-coolest painting ever. Seriously, it is so amazing. And it was free. The Ochibos liked it so much that one Ochibo has decided to go live with the artist, Ali Spagnola. He leaves today for his new home, he is so excited!

Real Working Monsters

Have you stopped by the ArtsiBitsi Monster Lab lately? I've been cooking up some new hard-working monsters to help you keep up your spirits during your tough school day.

First, meet BORIS here. This mini composition book has a happy monster cover that will make you smile, while it keeps all of your schedules, notes and assignments safe. Or, use it as a journal to write down your dreams and fantasies. Don't worry -- this monster will never tell.

And second, meet VLAD. He packs a whole lot of function into a very small package. Barely 4"x3", there is still room for a calculator, pen, and a couple business or credit cards. Just hang your house key off the ring and you are all set for school or work.

Hey, everybody!

Just felt like showing off my Frankenstein Monster Fuzzy Octopod . . . And who would appreciate him more than a bunch of monster-loving weirdos like you guys? (Of course, that is a compliment).

I love him a lot:
: D
Lots more new stuff since last post, too.
Kay, thanks!

I support babies that like monsters and skulls

I/Dotted with Hearts have 3 kids that have a ridiculous love for monsters, skulls, and rockabilly.
What better way to combine them, then with this awesome onesie!

Also, Frankencake is sticking around. Seriously. Is anything more awesome than babies wearing monsters?

Black Fez Studios at Craft Lake City

On Saturday, August 8th we attended our first show, Craft Lake City in downtown SLC, Utah.
It's the very first alternative craft show in the area, so we figured we were playing to our crowd. The show opened at two p.m. with live Rockabilly acts playing through the day, and the crowd didn't let up until we struck at ten that night. Rachel and I spent the month prior trying to get our goal of 100 monsters ready for the show, and we made it with 103!
The best part? Only 24 came home with us. It was so much more succesful for us than we ever could have hoped, and we have been invited to attend three more shows through the end of the year!

So, now we need to make several hundred more!

All in all, worth every second. I couldn't be happier with this little "project" of ours, and how it has brought our family closer!

Want a FREE plush from Chiikake Shop?!

HELLO EVERYONE! =D

I have decided to hold a CONTEST! Yay! It's my first! =D Please support me. <3

• GENERAL:

Your task is to design a plush!

- It has to be your original design, no "borrowing" from other artists.
- The simpler and cuter it is the better. Keep in mind my dolls are generally about 5 inches tall.
- You don't have to match my style, I'm very open to new things.
- Your design can be a sketch, digital illustration, painting, whatever makes you happy.
- It has to be colored and this is because if you send in a doodle, I might not be able to tell what's what. Also, it helps when I make it!

• WHAT'S THAT?

Yes yes, the winning design will be made into your own, personal plush doll and I will even pay the shipping fee to get it to you. =D

• WHO GET TO CHOOSE?

I DO! I will pick the one that I think is cutest and the most fun to make. I promise I won't pass yours up just because it's a little more difficult, as long as it's SUPER CUTE.

• WHO CAN ENTER?

EVERYONE! You can actually submit more than one to increase your chances. =D But remember this is not about quantity but creativity

• WHAT? YOU CAN'T DRAW? =0

Ah, it's okay! =P 2ND PRIZE TO THE RESCUE! To win the 2nd prize:

- Create a love story for my two brand new couple (image below).

- If your story is chosen (by me), you will be able to pick ANY animal/monster listed in my Etsy shop and I will ship it to you, FREE OF CHARGE!

• YEAH YEAH?! WANNA ENTER NOW?!

1. Please leave me a comment on this post. Something along the line of "I'M IN!"

2. Follow this method:
- On DeviantArt, LINK me your entry and I'll add it to my Favorite.
- On Xanga, post it on YOUR site and send me a MESSAGE with the link.
- If you find me anywhere else, please EMAIL me (chiikake.at.gmail.com), either the LINK or your actual design.
- Please don't send it through AIM or YM!, you don't know how many pictures I have on my laptop, I won't find it again! =(
- When in doubt, JUST ASK!

3. I will send you back a message thanking you for your submission. If you don't receive one... I didn't get it. =0

• LAST DAY TO SUBMIT:

The contest begins today, August 20th and ends on Tuesday, September 8th. That's a little over 2 weeks. I will judge all entries together (so I won't be biased) and the result as well as the finished product will be posted sometimes the following week. We all know I'm super-efficient when it comes to non-school-related business. =D

If there ends up being a lot of submissions, I will add more prizes! Your chances will NEVER decrease. So PLEASE, PLEASE (pretty please with cherries on top) spread the news to your friends, family, colleagues, classmates, etc. Repost this, link to this, recommend this (Yes, you Xangans!) and I'll love you FOREVER!

Yours,

Chiikake

Art Update in "ranzangel land"

Hi fellow monster makers and monster art fans,

The latest monsters I've made reside within the textured green walls of these two paintings. I doodled the sea creatures on regular computer paper while on the phone, then put them in a little box I have of such things that I use later for collage. These are collaged acrylic paintings on hand stretched canvas. I made them with an exhibit theme in mind which was 'Green' - artist's inspirations and perpectives on the color and the concept (as in environmental.)

The concept I considered while making these was our continuing discovery of sea creatures and species of all kinds that we previously didn't even know existed. The diversity of creatures on this planet is phenomenal, yet we continue to pollute and endanger. We learn every day that there is much about the delicate balance that we don't truly understand or respect. There is much we can do to protect the 'unknown' (and I don't just mean sea monsters... I mean our great grandchildren and their pet goldfish and such.)

These two fellows are titled "Friend of the Deep" and "Friends in Green". They hung at Artworks Gallery here in Chestertown, MD during the month of June. Now they are happily awaiting their new homes via etsy and will make an outing to Art in the Park Chestertown in September if they are still with me. Thanks for looking!
